WELCOME to our annual Books of the Year, in which writers and critics share their favourite reads of 2014. As always, I did not restrict the contributors to books published this year, though most of those discussed here were. I simply asked them to nominate the books they read this year that they would most like readers to know about. Writing our summer reading-Christmas gift guide last week, I said Ceridwen Dovey’s story collection Only the Animals would be the most mentioned book. Well, I may have been hasty.
